Audio engineering
An audio engineer, also called audio technician, audio technologist or sound technician, is a specialist in a skilled trade that deals with the use of machinery and equipment for the recording, mixing and reproduction of sounds. The field draws on many artistic and vocational areas, including electronics, acoustics, psychoacoustics, and music. An audio technician is proficient with different types of recording media, such as analog tape, digital multitrack recorders and workstations, and computer knowledge. With the advent of the digital age, it is becoming more and more important for the audio technician to be versed in the understanding of software and hardware integration from synchronization to analog to digital transfers.
Audio engineering concerns the creative and practical aspects of sounds and music, in contrast with the formal engineering discipline known as acoustical engineering. Producer, engineer, mixer Phil Ek has described audio engineering as the “technical aspect of recording—the placing of microphones, the turning of pre-amp knobs, the setting of levels. The physical recording of any project is done by an engineer… the nuts and bolts.”[1] Many recording engineers also invented new technology, equipment and techniques, to enhance the process and art.[2]
Terminology
Terms such as “audio technician”, “sound technician”, “audio engineer”, “audio technologist”, “sound mixer” and “sound engineer” can be ambiguous; depending on the context they may be synonymous, or they may refer to slightly different roles in audio production. Such terms can refer to a person working in sound and music production, as well as to technicians who design professional equipment for these tasks[citation needed]. Certain jurisdictions specifically prohibit the use of the title engineer to any individual not a registered member of a professional engineering licensing body.
Individuals who design acoustical simulations of rooms, shaping algorithms for digital signal processing and computer music problems, perform institutional research on sound, and other advanced fields of audio engineering are most often graduates of an accredited college or university, or have passed a difficult civil qualification test.
Other languages, such as German and Italian, have different words to refer to these activities. For instance, in German, the Tontechniker (audio technician) is the one who operates the audio equipment and the Tonmeister (sound master) is a person who creates recordings or broadcasts of music who is both deeply musically trained (in ‘classical’ and non-classical genres) and who also has a detailed theoretical and practical knowledge of virtually all aspects of sound, whereas the Toningenieur (audio engineer) is the one who designs, builds and repairs it.[citation needed]
Practitioners
An audio engineer is someone with experience and training in the production and manipulation of sound through mechanical (analog) or digital means. As a professional title, this person is sometimes designated as a sound engineer or recording engineer instead. A person with one of these titles is commonly listed in the credits of many commercial music recordings (as well as in other productions that include sound, such as movies).
Audio engineers are generally familiar with the design, installation, and/or operation of sound recording, sound reinforcement, or sound broadcasting equipment, including large and small format consoles. In the recording studio environment, the audio engineer records, edits, manipulates, mixes, and/or masters sound by technical means in order to realize an artist’s or record producer‘s creative vision. While usually associated with music production, an audio engineer deals with sound for a wide range of applications, including post-production for video and film, live sound reinforcement, advertising, multimedia, and broadcasting. When referring to video games, an audio engineer may also be a computer programmer.
In larger productions, an audio engineer is responsible for the technical aspects of a sound recording or other audio production, and works together with a record producer or director, although the engineer’s role may also be integrated with that of the producer. In smaller productions and studios the sound engineer and producer is often one and the same person.
In typical sound reinforcement applications, audio engineers often assume the role of producer, making artistic and technical decisions, and sometimes even scheduling and budget decisions.[3]
Different professional branches
There are four distinct steps to commercial production of a recording: Recording, editing, mixing, and mastering. Typically, each is performed by a sound engineer who specializes only in that part of production.
- Studio engineer – an engineer working within a studio facility, either with a producer or independently
- Recording engineer – engineer who records sound.
- Assistant engineer – often employed in larger studios, allowing them to train to become full-time engineers. They often assist full-time engineers with microphone setups, session breakdowns and in some cases, rough mixes.[3]
- Mixing engineer – a person who creates mixes of multi-track recordings. It is common for a commercial record to be recorded at one studio and later mixed by different engineers in other studios.
- Mastering engineer – typically the person who mixes the final stereo tracks (or sometimes just a few tracks or stems) that the mix engineer produces. The mastering engineer makes any final adjustments to the overall sound of the record in the final step before commercial duplication. Mastering engineers use principles of equalization and compression to affect the coloration of the sound.
- Game audio designer engineer – deals with sound aspects of game development.
- Live sound engineer – a person dealing with live sound reinforcement. This usually includes planning and installation of speakers, cabling and equipment and mixing sound during the show. This may or may not include running the foldback sound. A live/sound reinforcement engineer hears musical material and tries to correlate that sonic experience with system performance.[4]
- Foldback or Monitor engineer – a person running foldback sound during a live event. The term “foldback” is outdated and refers to the practice of folding back audio signals from the FOH (Front of House) mixing console to the stage in order for musicians to hear themselves while performing. Monitor engineers usually have a separate audio system from the FOH engineer and manipulate audio signals independently from what the audience hears, in order to satisfy the requirements of each performer on stage. In-ear systems, digital and analog mixing consoles, and a variety of speaker enclosures are typically used by monitor engineers. In addition most monitor engineers must be familiar with wireless or RF (radio-frequency) equipment and must interface personally with the artist(s) during each performance.
- Systems engineer – responsible for the design setup of modern PA systems which are often very complex. A systems engineer is usually also referred to as a “crew chief” on tour and is responsible for the performance and day-to-day job requirements of the audio crew as a whole along with the FOH audio system.
- Audio post engineer – a person who edits and mixes audio for film and/or television.
Education
Audio engineers come from backgrounds such as fine arts, broadcasting, music or electronics. Many colleges and accredited institutions around the world offer degrees in audio engineering, such as a BS in audio production. The University of Miami’s Frost School of Music was the first university in the United States to offer a four-year Bachelor of Music degree in Music Engineering Technology. In the last 25 years, some contemporary music schools have initiated audio engineering programs, usually awarding a Bachelor of Music degree emphasizing the use of audio technology as opposed to the mathematics and physics of acoustics and electrical engineering that is part of a traditional engineering program at an engineering college or department within a university. Some audio engineers are autodidacts with no formal training.

audio scrubbing
The process of moving within an audio file or tape to locate a particular section. The term originally comes from the days of reel-to-reel players, when rocking a reel would give the impression of scrubbing tape across the head. Many audio scrub tools today allow the user to drag a cursor across the wave form to audition different sections of an audio file.

Skype Voice Changer
If you always wanted to sound like someone else when making calls in Skype you might find the Skype Voice Changer application handy. The software provides the means to change the voice in Skype but can also alter the voices in mp3 or wav files that get loaded directly into the software. The current release is an experimental release that makes use of filters to alter the voice in Skype in realtime. All that needs to be done is to select one or multiple filters from the list of available ones and press the Connect To Skype button in the top bar.
The program provides access to a dozen filters ranging from Delay and Tremolo to Chorus and 3 Band EQ. While it is not currently able to change the voice in Skype to that of Darth Vader, or any other famous living, dead or fictional celebrity in this regard. Each filter can be configured separately by using the sliders that appear after the selection. The amount and function of the sliders depend on the selected filters. They usually range between 3 and 6 different sliders to change the frequency, length or delay.
Multiple filters can be combined with each other to use all their effects for the voice changing process. Skype Voice Changer is currently available for computer systems running Microsoft Windows. A version of the Microsoft .net Framework seems to be required to run the software although no details are given on the program’s homepage.

May 17th 2011 @ 1:37pm ( another great resource for german sheppards)
I found another great resource for german sheppherds… a rescue site.. with some really beautiful animals… i swear one of the pictures looks soooo much like one of our old german sheppards… amazing… so here is the information for them:
TopicsHome ContactsPhone – 941 575 0243 Fax – 941 866 2622 User FunctionsLost your password? | HomeThe Hoffer Family Foundation Inc. (a 501C3) founded South West Florida German Shepherd Rescue in 2007. Our Rescue implemented its program in early 2008. To date IN 2010 we have adopted out over 38 pure bred German Shepherd dogs and about 8 not so pure bred, but tremendous four legged friends. IN THE PAST 3 YEARS OF THE FOUNDATION WE HAVE ADOPTED OUT OVER 70 GERMAN SHEPHERDS TO GREAT FAMILIES! We operate the rescue with dogs received from shelters and from owner turn-ins. Follow us on Twitter, my sign on is Hoffdogbun! These dogs primarily come from an area just south of Tampa, to just South of Naples Florida. Our Mission: To take in discarded or turned-in German Shepherd Dogs, give them a positive environment, healthy food, medical attention, socialization and lots of love and understanding in order to find them new forever homes in our local communities. We are breed specific but at times fall in love with a dog or two that requires our help. We seek qualified families and individuals who wish to own German Shepherd dogs. If you wish to adopt, please send us an email to schedule a qualification interview. The interviews are held in Punta Gorda. Our ideal adopter is someone who has had a GSD in their past and knows the breed. We especially want people who will dedicate the appropriate time to train the dog. We require that people we adopt to have the resources for the medical any physical health costs of the animal. We especially want people who will provide the kindness, compassion, love and affection these dogs crave in a forever home. Adoption Process: Our adoption process begins with an interview. We will ask you about your current pets, we will ask you for evidence of their up to date vaccinations, your vets name and number, your track record in keeping animal shots and registrations up to date, your training experience and about your commitment. We will ask to meet your entire family and anyone else that lives in the home with the dog. We will also ask that if you have pets, that you bring your dog here to meet his new friend. We will require that you sign an agreement regarding the care of the dog you may be given. We will ask that upon adoption that you show us receipts for 6 months of heart worm prevention and give us your vets name and address and phone for verification purposes. We charge $150 for any dog we adopt out and $150 for any we take in as give ups from owners. We also require owner give ups to be spayed or neutered, at the owners expense prior to the turn over. At the point when dogs are surrendered to SWFLGSD Rescue we require all medical records be given to us along with any chip registration information and numbers, complete shot record and vet who administered them as well as a current heart worm test paid for by the owner prior to turning the dog over to us. The money is paid to us by check made out to the Animal Welfare League of Charlotte County. The AWL is a 501C3 charity and the ‘donation is tax deductible. These funds provide us with medical resources we need to cover expenses required to restore the health of many of the dogs we get. The AWL provides us with assistance and supports us in countless ways. We strongly recommend researching the breed before deciding on a GSD. Once you have adopted a dog, we recommend a qualified training program. WE NOW REQUIRE LOCAL AREA RESIDENTS TO ENROLL YOUR NEW DOG IN TRAINING AND POST A MINIMUM OF 1 6 WEEKS CLASS SESSION AT A COST OF $70 IN A CHECK MADE OUT TO THE CHARLOTTE BOC. This class is taught buy the Peace River Dog Fanciers club. For those adopting outside the local Punta Gorda area, we require proof of enrollment in any dog training class from PetsMart to Schutzund. As affiliates of the German Shepherd Schutzhund Club of SW Florida, whose contact information appears above, we advise you to seek their help in developing a training regimen during the first 6 months you have the dog. This needed training will insure a bond between you and your pet and guaranties a great relationship for life. Nothing is more stressful than having an animal you love be out of control, unruly or unsocialized. It is important to note that we are not in the pet business, but rather a rescue. When we get dogs we do our best to find them qualified adoptive families. We do not seek out dogs to rescue. If you are approved to get a dog from us, we will not stop trying to find the perfect dog for you until you have the perfect pet. We never ask that you take any dog, but rather show you what we have in our system and allow you to decide. We will always take a dog back if things do not work out. You will never feel pressure from us to accept any animal we offer. We expect honesty from any potential adopter in giving us as much direction as possible in so far as “your perfect dog’. If you feel that a German Shepherd is right for you and your family then give us a call at 941 575 0243 or email us at alphadog63@comcast.net or goingtothedogs@comcast.net to schedule an interview in Punta Gorda. You can now follow us on Facebook and Twitter if I could only figure out how to use them. | Who’s OnlineGuest Users: 1 |
